Forum: GratefulDead Subject: The "Most Popular Age Group"?

Being pretty new to the Land of Facebook (a sure sign that it's day is long gone), I keep finding out stuff that probably everyone else already knew.

Like if you click on the "like" page of a group, it gives you stats. Such as the "most popular age group" "talking" about that page. So I did that on the GD FB page, which has 1.4 million "likes." The "most popular age group" comes out as ... 25-34 year olds.

That's kinda cool. I mean, that's folks who were born between 1978 and, gulp, 1987. The chances of many folks in that group having ever seen a show at all, let alone a half-decent one, is like ... well, probably like the chance that FB stats are an accurate gauge of anything other than who uses FB. But still.

So, who are these Active Talkers and Likers? Folks brought to the band by Furthur? By the jam band scene? People who just like to click on lots of "likes"? And how the hey does a page "know" when people are "talking" about it ... and their ages, too ... cue theme from Twilight Zone ...

Oh, and the people "talking" most about the GD are in Chicago. According to that page.

So now you know.

Actually, WHEN I arrive its time is past (nope, not yet there).

My primary reasoning is that I don't really WANT people to be able to find me...at least not easily. Not that I am a criminal or anything, but I don't really need the extra work, and that's the plain fact of it--most people track you down in your office, on the phone, wherever, to ask you fur somthin, eh?

I take it as an extension of Walter Brennan's folksy wisdom from Red River: "...something, something...never cared for strangers riding up on me...guess it's cause a stranger never 'good news'd' me..."

"Good news'd me" How can you not appreciate that?

Now, as to how this age group you tracked down came to be I have no idea...my question is "what IS the defn age group now?"

IE, what is the largest age group, by decade say, that listens to the DEAD? 50-59?

Of course...

;)

Hi AR, long time no talk! I am a bit of a Facebook junkie (sad I know), so I may be able to help with this one. My experiences from the comments section of GD posts are that there are a lot of what I'd call causal fans; people who dig the songs but don't get too deeply into this or that jam. Of course I realize we are a bunch of freaks around here, but this is just the impression I get. Still, there are a number of people my age that post who do surprise me with their knowledge and devotion.

To your question, how does it know... This the very reason FB had such a highly over-valued IPO... It collects and cross-references all the data it mines on users' pages, and returns this valuable demographic data to its advertisers.

No mystery on the youngsters-- they're just far more apt to be using FB than codgers like WT. and, I'd would venture that Chicago has a lot of Deadheads, ranking only after Calif. and NY areas.
